Apparently the writers of the film didn't because it's not quite dumb, but it's not quite Smart either.
The film is very formulaic and while there are great turns by every actor trying to squeeze jokes out of the script the entire time, a lot of it falls flat. Trudging through the old "Agent meets girl, girl hates agent, agent woos girl, girl falls in love with agent while the fate of the world is at hand" has been done before and to better effect.
I remember when I first heard about the idea to remake this. I wasn't totally against it because I thought no one else could do a better job than Steve Carrell. If anyone would fill the shoes of Don Adams, it was him. And he does fill the shoes, it's just that they don't fit quite right.
It's not to say that I didn't get a few chuckles (I even laughed out loud once but that was at something no one else got apparently...it was the blanket reference) but I couldn't help thinking back to the old series which was one of the funniest things ever on television.
I think the main problem with the film is that the character of Max is bumbling except when...he's not. By that I mean that he seems to have all of this spectacular prowess just when he needs it. Yes, I realize the character was updated for today's generation but I think that's the problem with all of these remakes or transitions from TV into film and vice versa...
When you copy an original, you get a pale impersonation...and today's generation will settle for that...
Until we get smart(er), Hollywood will keep churning out lame fare like this
