Adventures Far Out And Close To Home

Today I had a bit of a reprieve from family as I struck out alone and only mentioned where I was going at the last minute...

I had to see the latest Star Trek movie.

Never a big "Trekkie", I do, nevertheless, have a certain fondness for a few of the movies (Wrath of Khan, of course, just because it's a great movie in and of itself) and usually enjoyed The Next Generation whenever I caught it on TV. I also wanted to see what JJ Abrams had in store for the reboot.

Honestly, I thought it was great! The manner in which the story was handled was...uh..."logical" (pun intended) and reintroduced the same characters but in a different light. I'll admit that I was a bit worried when they mentioned Leonard Nimoy would reprise his role as Spock as I was curious as to how they were going to weave the old character into the new tapestry.

Pretty flawlessly, I have to say. In an interesting twist, both the new Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the old are a major part of the story and the movie should satisfy old fans as well as gain new ones for a successful franchise! I highly recommend it!

Then around 8pm tonight, I was looking for something else to watch. While flipping around the stations, I saw that Forgetting Sarah Marshall was going to be on HBO. I'd heard that it was absolutely hilarious so I wanted to give it a shot.

Apart from the few interruptions from family (of course only when I'm deeply engrossed in something), I was able to catch the whole movie. Sad to say that it wasn't as funny as everyone claimed, yet I was far from disappointed. I found it to be sweet, touching and humorous...and the most important thing was that it had a heart. I found myself liking it more and more as it went on because the characters seemed real to me.

It also didn't hurt that Mila Kunis is incredibly hot and the character she played is now among my "top 5 movie girlfriends of all time" (which includes Elisabeth Shue in Karate Kid, Jennifer Connelly in Career Opportunities, Minnie Driver in Grosse Pointe Blank and Virginia Madsen in Sideways).

All in all, not a bad movie day to say the least...

I can't comment on the new Star Trek movie but must say I agree with you about Forgetting Sarah Marshall. That new boyfriend of hers was hysterical and I admit developing a soft spot for Peter, so stupidly dumped by Sarah, who obviously doesn't see a good guy when she has one.

Bitter? Me? Hell ya!!!

While I haven't seen either movie yet, I'd heard the same thing about Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I trust your opinions and will rush out to see Star Trek (of course that'll be the moment its on DVD) and get around to the other some time ;-)

Brian,

Yeah...even if you don't like sci-fi or Star Trek, it's just a damned good movie!
